Always put your children first

When thinking of divorce, it is important to consider your children.  Most couples want to do what is best for their children, but during divorce proceedings this can be difficult.

As you prepare for two separate lives, it is important to discuss child custody obligations and responsibilities with your soon-to-be ex-spouse.  Keep in mind that children benefit greatly when they have equal time with both parents.  It is your child who suffers most when you, as the primary care parent, did not allow your spouse to visit with his or her children.

Give your children the credit of knowing what is going on.  Even though you try, you cannot always hide your emotions from them. Children have a way of knowing what’s going on – they hear you on the telephone or while you’re complaining about your ex-spouse to your friends.

Your job as a parent is to lessen the negativity surrounding your children during divorce.  Treat your ex-spouse respectfully and put your children’s feelings ahead of your own.  Don’t let your divorce get in the way of your children’s happy childhood.
