Division of property

Divorce, for some, can be a traumatic experience.  Dividing property and assets that you have accumulated over the years can be very stressful and emotional.

California is considered to be a community property state where property is split 50/50 after it is evaluated to determine a dollar amount.  Community property includes the family house, motor vehicles, recreational vehicles, vacation home, financial accounts, jewelry, art, and household furnishings. In addition, all debts outstanding at the end of the marriage are divided equally.

Separate property, or property owned before the marriage, is not included in the division.  Examples include an inheritance or gift and bank accounts that are kept separate and not included in marital undertakings.
