Divorce and paying for college

Follow Us

Is a parent responsible for paying a child’s college-related expenses?  Is it part of child support?  The issue of paying college expenses has become a major concern when negotiating a divorce settlement.

Courts today recognize the need for a child’s college education.  They will honor most child support agreements made between the parents that have provisions for paying college expenses.  However, with the economy the way it is today, an agreement is not always advisable since financial circumstances change and are usually not good after a divorce.

Expenses include tuition, room and board, telephone, food, clothing, computer, transportation, and general day-to-day living.

California does not have a statute that holds the parent obligated to pay for their child’s college education.  If you have a child that will be attending college in the near future, consult with an experienced Riverside Family Law attorney who can explain the impact college education costs can have on your future financial situation.
