Former NFL Player Still Battling Custody Issues

Nothing is more heartbreaking than children caught in the middle of a bitter custody dispute. There are two types of custody which are usually awarded:

  1. physical custody, where the children primarily reside, and
  2. legal custody, which involves major decision making regarding education, health and the general welfare of the children.  In most cases, it is best when the parents can come to a satisfactory agreement – an agreement that is in the best interests of their children.

Those of you who are football fans may be following the contested divorce between former NFL player Deion Sanders and his wife Pilar, which has been going on since 2011. The couple has been battling in a child custody dispute for a long time.

Originally the court ruled that all the children would live with their father and the mother would be given a visitation schedule.  Now a different judge has been assigned as an arbitrator in the case.  The dispute has now been resolved in court, awarding Deion with primary custody of his two sons, ages 13 and 11.  He and his former wife will share custody of their 9-year old daughter.

Deion stated after the decision was made, “I’m thankful; I’m elated.  In any war, there will be casualties, but I didn’t want the casualties in this case to be my kids.”  Pilar, on the other hand, is not happy and plans to appeal the decision.
