Getting through the holidays

Follow Us

With more than 50% of all marriages ending in divorce, nearly half of all children experience the holiday season with only one parent or two different celebrations.  Handling the first holiday after divorce is one of the greatest challenges a newly divorced parent will face.

The following are some tips to create a stress-free holiday season:

·         Act in your children’s best interests

·         Decide what is best for your children:

o   Sharing your children during the holidays

o   Choosing one home for them to spend time in

o   Sitting down together with ex-spouse in a nice way

o   Include extended family – grandparents

·         Create new rituals involving your children

·         Make plans ahead of time

·         Be flexible

·         Never get into the blame game in front of your children

·         Don’t compete with your ex-spouse – Instead cooperate

·         Don’t try to buy your children’s affection

The holidays are almost here.  Be realistic and accept any imperfections that arise.  Holidays are tough for everyone and can make you feel overwhelmed and out of control.  If this happens, take a deep breath and move forward.
