How long does child support have to be paid?

Follow Us

In California, a child is entitled to be supported by both of his or her parents until the age of 18 – sometimes longer.  If your child is a full-time high school student and still lives with a parent, support ends when he or she graduates or turns 19, whichever occurs first.

However, if the child gets married, becomes self-supporting, or enlists in the military, the child is usually considered to be emancipated and the parents support obligation ends.  Parents can always agree to support a child longer.  The court may also order both parents to continue support if there is a disabled adult child that cannot be self-supporting.
