Keeping the engagement ring

Follow Us

An engagement ring and a wedding ring are symbols of the couple’s promise to marry.  The question of what happens to the engagement ring often comes up?  An engagement ring is given to the woman prior to the marriage; it is a non-marital asset and the woman gets to keep it regardless of its value.

What happens when the ring is a family heirloom?  This is a time when the ring, in good faith, should be returned.  There are very few wives who would begrudge her husband and his family of getting back their ring if the marriage is over.

Of course there are times when the wife is left in financial stress and cannot afford her rent or car payment or anything else.  Think about selling it or pawning it.  Check with several jewelers to determine its value first.  Remember, it’s your ring and you can do whatever you want with it.
