Paying lump-sum spousal support

Follow Us

A lump-sum spousal support settlement is a fixed payment made by one spouse to the other that comprises all the support that would be paid over a specific period – decided by the court.  It is generally given instead of a property settlement when there is little property to divide.

Lump-sum spousal support cannot be modified regardless of how the circumstances may change.  However, it can be discharged if the spouse paying the support declares bankruptcy.

There are many pros and cons that go along with paying lump-sum spousal support.  For this reason, it would be best to discuss with an experienced Riverside Family Law attorney who can advise you if this is a good idea in your situation.
