Domestic violence is a serious offense.

It is a form of abuse that occurs within a family setting. Domestic violence can occur between husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, parents and their children, or even between siblings. Often times, abuse manifests in physical, psychological, emotional, sexual, or financial forms.

When domestic abuse is not reported or dealt with, it is known to get progressively worse, leaving victims in a state of utter despair and helplessness.

Often, when a spouse decides to file for divorce, the negative feelings towards the other spouse lead to violence.

Authorities arrested punk rocker and professional skateboard Duane Peters on a felony domestic violence charge. He was charged with assaulting his girlfriend at their home in Long Beach. The extent of her injuries is unclear, but it was reported that the woman sustained some bodily injuries from the altercation. Neighbors were said to have heard an altercation and intervened in the dispute, restraining Peters until the police arrived.

Peters, 52, is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He faces up to four years in state prison if he is convicted as charged.

All too often, people overlook instances of domestic violence and believe it is no big deal. Perhaps it is because the victims have been subjected to years of ongoing physical, mental or emotional abuse, and feel that these types of behaviors are normal. Or, maybe they are just afraid to speak up.
