What is spousal maintenance?

Follow Us

Spousal maintenance is also known as alimony or spousal support.  It is the financial support that the judge might order one ex-spouse to pay to the other after the divorce is final.  If ordered, its purpose is to allow the person receiving it to live the lifestyle he or she was used to during the marriage.

In order to receive spousal maintenance, the judge considers:

·     The length of the marriage

·     The income of both parties

·     The age of both parties

·     Any contributions made by each spouse while married

·     Each party’s current financial resources

In today’s economy, asking for alimony or having to pay it may be difficult.  If you are being ordered to pay alimony or you believe you should receive it, contact an experienced Riverside Family Law attorney who can discuss your legal options with you.
