What to expect from a divorce

Every divorce is different – different issues, different property, and different people.  Start off with realistic expectations and you will not be sorry in the end.  The idea of divorce can be frightening to many – ending a significant relationship, not seeing your children on a daily basis, and going into an unknown future.

In California, a community property state, the courts will attempt to divide all property with a 50/50 split, which includes all assets and businesses acquired during the marriage.  If decisions cannot be made between the couple, the judge will make them.  The courts will also determine child support, child custody, visitation, and alimony

The judge will make the best decision regarding the division of property and equal time with the child, keeping in mind the child’s best interests.  The judge could do just so much; he or she cannot make the couples be civil to each other.  Bringing your ex-spouse into court for every detail could be both frustrating and very expensive, not to mention time-consuming.

Finally, a judge cannot heal the emotional wounds you may be suffering; that is up to you.  If you are going through a divorce, it may be just the fresh start you need.  Contact an experienced California Family Law attorney, who can help you work out all the issues involved and get you to that fresh start that you need and deserve.
