Has your divorce become a dog fight?  A report released from the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers states that 23 percent of divorce cases involve pet custody cases.  Having a pet and going through a divorce can bring up many issues, such as custody of the pet, visitation rights and schedules, paying the vet bills, etc.

Several celebrities have battled over their dog.  They include Drew Barrymore, Britney Spears and Kate Gosselin – to name a few.  Today, courts consider pets as members of the family.  Like children, their best interests are considered.  In the book We Can’t Stay Together For The Dogs, author Jennifer Keanse says, “There are tests to determine who the dog likes better and then the pet goes to that spouse.”

Many individuals consider their dog or cat to be a member of their family.  So, if you are considering a divorce, consider which one of you will take care of the family pet the best.  If you cannot, there are Family Law attorneys who can help you.
